Established in 1954, the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (hereafter referred to as NTCRI) is a third-level central agency under the Ministry of Culture. It is the only government agency in Taiwan that is responsible for the support of craft culture and the craft industry. We are committed to craft research and innovation, talent cultivation, craft inspection and repair, publication and exhibition, craft collection and value-added application, support for local craft, craft aesthetics education promotion, international cultural exchange and cooperation.
NTCRI is a platform for promoting the development and exchange of Taiwan’s craft culture. In addition to all participants in the craft industry ecosystem, it is hoped that craft involvement in society and public participation will be fostered in order to take care of the people living in Taiwan. Our aim is to practice the concept of “Craft for All”, and to achieve the dual goals of perfecting Taiwan's craft ecosystem and enhancing the social practice of Taiwan's craft values.
The exhibition presents a project called “A NEW LAYER 3” and showcases co-creation crafts. Developed by nine foreign designers from Israel, Germany, France, America, South Korea, the Philippines, and three domestic designers and Taiwanese craftsmen. The internationally renowned Israeli jewelry designer, Ms. Deganit Schocken, was appointed as the artistic director for the project to lead designers and craftsmen to use lacquer as a medium to create wearable crafts. Based on traditional lacquer art, every piece contains the spirit of craftsmanship focusing on details, and features contemporary aesthetics design. Through the communication and exchanges among designers and craftsmen, unique and exceptional new crafts are created by mutual understanding and respect for other types of artistic skills and by emphasis on the interaction between people and their professional capabilities. Through unique creation, these crafts reveal the beauty of Taiwanese craftsmanship implementing modern design.
