Craft Trend Fair 2019 (CTF) hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST; Minister Park, Yang-woo) and organized by Korea Craft & Design Foundation (KCDF; President Choi, Bong-hyun) will be held in COEX Hall A in Samsung-dong, Seoul, Korea from December 12 (THU) to 15 (SUN).
Marking its 14th year, CTF is the largest craft fair in Korea dedicated to the distribution & business of craftworks. This year’s fair will be participated by around 1,600 craft artists and 320 makers and organizations from five countries including Korea, and some 70,000 audiences are expected to visit the fair. There are 646 booths installed including Main Exhibition, Showcase Exhibition, KCDF Project Pavilion, Craft Brands Zone, Gallery Zone, University Zone and International Zone. Through this, craft market will be invigorated and various programs will be offered to enable members of the craft culture industry to build a network.
Main Exhibition, narrating the story about craft through the passage of time
In Main Exhibition, craftworks are embraced in a space where the passage of time of making the craft and artist’s stories are strongly bonded together, rather than simply regarding craft as a piece of artistic work. Under the theme of Object, Objects… directed by Choi, Joo-yeon (Vice President of Younhyun Trading), it shows how an artist starts from contemplating on a material to use with a certain intention and endures a long time to create an “Object.” Such craftwork does not exist as a separate “Object” but is expressed as “Objects…” that exists in harmony with the space it is in. In the end, the core concept of the Main Exhibition focuses on factors surrounding the craft, such as the passage of time and material, the production process and environment and person’s context, ultimately leading to the conversion of past-decisive thinking of “what it is” to future-oriented thinking of “what it will be.”
Showcase Exhibition, in search of personal taste
Featuring signature craftwork and new collections of participating artists, Showcase Exhibition further solidifies the fair’s objective of reinvigorating the craft industry. Directed by Kim, Sang-yoon (CEO of Listen Communication), the theme of Showcase Exhibition is Traces of Time. In the exhibition, time and space of nature layered with hearts of respecting different tastes of audiences will be created to enable one to search for one’s taste rather than approaching the craftwork from the perspective of current trends or universality. Showcase Exhibition will serve as an opportunity to encounter one’s taste through a variety of craftworks.
Distribution & marketing support for participating artists to vitalize the craft market
This year’s CTF focuses on invigoration of the craft market as last year, inviting buyers from Korea as well as 34 buyers from Asia and the U.S. with an aim to facilitate their meeting with participating artists and give support for export consulting after the deal is closed. More buyers were invited compared to last year’s fair in order to expand on-site deals.
Furthermore, grants for the Craftwork of the Year 2019 are increased to help youth craft artists to continue their creative work, and excellent crafts selected from University Zone are awarded cash prize. Also, through the Artist Discovery program, galleries participating in the fair will be able to select artists to open exhibitions in their galleries. International Zone participated by Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand will showcase their unique craftwork.
At the Craft Trend Fair seminar held on December 14, culture and art experts from home and abroad will share the latest trends in global craftwork and information on distribution and marketing. Various sessions on craft trend are prepared, including Global Craft Trend and Ethical Materials by Stylus’ senior Product Design editor Dewi Pinatih, Future by Changing Materials by Director of design studio MA-TT-ER Seetal Solanki, Collaboration between Global Brands and Craft by Korean craft promoter in France Ryu, Eun-hae, and Object, Objects…by Choi Joo-yeon Director of Main Exhibition.
International Craft Forum 2019 will also be held to comprehend the current situation of craft market. Held for two consecutive years, International Craft Forum 2019 under the theme of “Why Craft Now” will introduce craft events around the world, look into the reasons for paying attention to craftwork and identify situations across the globe, review the status of events during Korea Craft Week with persons concerned, and discuss cooperation and developmental direction among key events home and abroad to be held in the future.
